Thinking About Getting a Rottie Puppy?

I think a lot of folk get a Rottweiler puppy without fully understanding the commitment that they’re making. I thought the following might be helpful for anyone thinking about getting a puppy who has never had a Rottie before. If this is you, then please just consider the points below BEFORE you make that final decision.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY THAT CUTE ROTTWEILER PUPPY!

There are numerous books and a huge amount of information on the Internet on how to go about selecting a good quality Breeder and puppy. Have Decided That A Rottweiler Puppy Is For You’ . Taking the time to do your research before you get a new puppy will be the best start you can make.

Raising a well-rounded adult Rottweiler takes a huge amount of effort, dedication, responsibility, time and money. It is a tough job and a long haul. The initial amount of time and effort required from YOU will be almost every bit as tiring and intensive as taking care of a baby from birth until toddler age - ie up to 18/24 months.

If you want to house-train your dog, and believe me you do! You will usually have to get up every two hours, from the ages of 8-12 weeks, in order to put them outside to wee and/or poo.

Thereafter they should be able to hold their bladder for 1 hour, for each additional month they age. So, lucky ole’ you will be able to gain an extra hour of continuous sleep every month. If you have a full-time job, this will make you very, very tired and not just a little grumpy. Please do not take this out on the puppy, just as you wouldn’t berate a baby for soiling it’s nappy.

Rottweiler puppies are the cutest things to see. With their big paws, floppy ears, little pink panting tongues, sunshine bums and sweet faces all wrapped up in a soft furry cuddly package. This stage lasts for two, maybe three months after you bring them home at 8 weeks old. After that… Rotties GROW. FAST. Which is why they need early training and clear boundaries set for them.

As soon as you get your puppy, you should begin their basic training at home (sit, come, etc). Puppies usually go to their new homes between 7-9 weeks old. Do not take puppies home younger than 7 weeks, unless there is an exceptional reason for it AND you are an experienced and responsible Rottie owner who knows exactly what you are doing… in which case you probably wouldn’t be reading this post.

You will need to work with your puppy EVERY single day. This will involve taking them to training classes, playing with them, and socialising them with other animals, people, traffic, noise, and the world in general. If you don’t train and socialise your puppy you will pay the price, and more unfortunately so will your dog.

One of the most important windows for shaping your Rottweiler puppy in terms of behaviour falls between 8 to 12/16 weeks. During this period make sure your puppy is enrolled in Puppy Kindergarten where they will learn ‘bite inhibition’ and how to get along with other breeds, people etc.

You will need to make the time to regularly take your puppy to lots of different places to get them used to seeing new sights and sounds such as: traffic, pushchairs, other animals, trains, buses etc. Introduce them to as many new people as you can (choose wisely here), including children and adults.

Carry them to all the different places you take them, until you are comfortable with the level of immunisation they have acquired. DO NOT think about waiting to begin socialisation or training, or you will miss this important window in their development.

Male puppies start to mature at around 18-24 months… only fully maturing at around 3 years. Girls mature a little earlier. Until then, you will need to be able to spot and handle toddler tantrums, stroppy adolescent brat moments and hormonal teenager mood swings.

It is highly likely that your Rottweiler will at some point(s) in their life challenge you. This does not mean taking them straight to rescue, putting them to sleep, or trying to sell them on. What this does mean, is that you need to educate yourself (this Forum is a great start!), so that you are aware of what mental and physical changes you can expect from your Rottweiler as they grow. If you are prepared in advance, you will know what to look for and how to cope with it.

Rottweilers need calm assertive leadership. This is not shouting, beating, or otherwise abusing the dog. If you know you are not a calm assertive leader, then save the dog and yourself the tension and heartache and look for another breed more suited to your particular personality. Getting a breed that matches your personality is likely to be more successful, resulting in a better relationship between you and dog.

From the time you bring them home and for the rest of their life (10-12 years if you’re very lucky), you will have vet bills, food bills, insurance bills and all the other bills which come with owning a dog. Rottweilers ARE expensive. If you know you cannot afford to feed one and take it to the vet when the occasion arises (and trust me, it always arises at the most financially inconvenient times!), then DO NOT consider getting one.

YOU also have a DUTY to mentally and physically train, exercise, discipline and care for your Rottweiler each and every day for the rest of their life. Whatever your health and whatever the weather. And by the way, you will also always have early morning AND late night toilet duty - whatever your health and whatever the weather!

Rottweilers are NOT cute balls of fluff. They are not fur-babies, surrogate children or toy dogs. They are by nature noble, intelligent, loving and loyal companion animals, who are often spoilt by owners who bring them into their homes and then contrive to create an unbalanced, unfulfilled and frustrated dog.

Unless YOU are a responsible, experienced Breeder, leave Rottweiler breeding to responsible, experienced Breeders. There is a lot more to correct breeding than just putting a Male and Female together. Please do not become a backyard breeder yourself and do not buy your dogs from indiscriminate ‘breeders’, who care more about the money than the betterment of the breed.

If you want to get a Rottweiler for ‘Protection’, then buy a burglar alarm, or a baseball bat instead. If you buy a baseball bat, please use it to repeatedly whack yourself over the head for stupidity and ignorance about breed ownership.

If you feel you might not have sufficient commitment, patience, time, leadership, money, and/or sense of owner-responsibility, then DO NOT go near this breed. You will regret it, and so will every responsible Rottweiler owner.

Finally, loving your Rottie goes without saying. But please know this… love alone is not enough. Correctly raising a Rottweiler will require far more from you than that!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please do consider the points made before making your final decision.
